Lash extension aftercare
21-day care for 6-8 weeks of fullness
Lash extensions are the most aftercare-sensitive service in the beauty industry. Get the first 24 hours right + the daily cleanse routine, and a full set lasts 6 to 8 weeks (with bi-weekly fills in between). Get them wrong + you lose 40% of the lashes in the first 5 days.
0–24 hours
Adhesive cure window
The cyanoacrylate adhesive bonds in minutes but doesn't fully cure for 24 hours. Water + steam during this window weaken the bond + cause early shed. Skip showers below the chin / face wash / crying / saunas / hot yoga for the full day.
Do
- Sleep on your back if possible
- Sip cold water (no hot drinks with steam)
- Keep hands away from the eye area entirely
Skip
- Wash your face above the chin
- Get into a hot shower / sauna / steam room
- Apply ANY product near the eye
- Cry, swim, or be in heavy rain
Day 2–7
Daily oil-free cleanse
Counter to old advice: daily gentle cleansing prevents protein and oil buildup that degrades adhesive faster than the cleansing does. Use a foaming lash-specific cleanser. Pat dry; never rub.
Do
- Foam-pump a small amount of lash cleanser into your hand
- Apply with a clean fluffy brush in downward strokes
- Rinse with lukewarm water (low-pressure stream)
- Pat dry with a lint-free cloth
- Brush gently with a clean spoolie when dry
Skip
- Oil-based cleansers (coconut, jojoba, mineral, makeup remover)
- Cotton pads or wipes (fibers catch + pull lashes)
- Hot water blasted directly at the face
- Face-down sleeping
Day 8–14
Maintain + monitor shed rate
Normal shed is 1-5 lashes per day. By week 2 you've lost 15-25% of the original set. This is exactly when most artists schedule the first fill: the gaps are visible without being dramatic.
Do
- Continue daily cleansing
- Track shed pattern: even loss across both eyes is healthy
- Book the 2-3 week fill in advance
Skip
- Try to remove extensions yourself
- Use lash serums with prostaglandin analogs (they shed bonds faster)
- Switch sunscreens / moisturizers without checking ingredients
Day 15–21
Fill or full removal
Most clients book a fill at this point. If you're skipping the fill or you want a break, book a professional removal: picking them out at home damages natural lashes.
Do
- Book a fill appointment if continuing
- Book a professional removal if pausing
- Tell your artist about any lifestyle changes (new face wash, new skincare)
Skip
- Pull, pick, or twirl out remaining extensions
- Use oil to dissolve them at home (works but high adhesive-residue risk)
- Sleep in mascara
FAQ
Common questions
- How long do lash extensions last?
- With proper aftercare, a full set lasts 6 to 8 weeks before the natural lashes fully cycle out. Most clients get a fill every 2 to 3 weeks to maintain density: by week 3 you've typically lost 30-40% of the original lashes to natural shedding.
- When can I get my lashes wet after extensions?
- Avoid water for the first 24 hours. After that, daily gentle cleansing is encouraged: but no oils, no rubbing, no steam from a hot shower aimed at your face. Most lash artists recommend a lash-specific cleanser, not regular face wash (which often contains oil).
- Can I wear mascara with extensions?
- Best to skip entirely. If you must, only on the tips of natural lashes (never on extensions) + only water-based, never waterproof. Mascara residue + the solvents required to remove it both degrade the adhesive bond. Most clients find extensions look fuller than mascara anyway.
- Why are my lashes falling out so fast?
- Three most-common causes: (1) sleeping face-down + rubbing your face against the pillow, (2) using oil-based cleansers / makeup removers / sunscreens / moisturizers near the eye, (3) picking, pulling, or twirling them out of habit. Almost never the artist's fault if proper aftercare is followed.
- When should I book my first fill?
- Most clients book 2 to 3 weeks after the full set. Earlier = more density retained but more $ per visit; later = lash gaps become noticeable. Goldenhour's smart-rebook tracks your personal cadence after your first 3 visits + nudges at the right interval automatically.
