How to make a spray tan last
A spray tan’s wear time is decided in the first 48 hours. What you do between leaving the studio and your second shower makes the difference between 5 days and 10. Here’s the timeline that gets you the most out of every appointment.
0–8 hours after
Development window
This is when the spray solution reacts with your skin to lock in color. Anything that touches your skin during this window: water, sweat, tight fabric: can leave a permanent mark you'll see for a week.
Do
- Wear the loose dark clothing you arrived in until rinse time
- Stay cool: avoid workouts, walking far, or anything that makes you sweat
- Pat-dry any inadvertent splashes; don't rub

- Shower, bathe, or get caught in rain
- Swim or sit in a hot tub
- Sleep in tight pajamas, on tight sheets, or under heavy blankets
At 8 hours: first rinse
Rinse + pat dry
A standard spray tan rinses at 8 hours. Rapid or express tans rinse earlier per your artist's instructions. The water will run brown the first time: that's the cosmetic bronzer washing off, not your actual tan.
Do
- Lukewarm water only; no hot
- First rinse: water only, no soap or body wash
- Pat completely dry with a soft towel
Skip
- Hot water, long showers, or steam rooms
- Loofahs, scrubs, exfoliants, or rough washcloths
- Shaving: wait at least 24h after the first rinse
Day 1–3
Lock the color in
The tan continues to set in the first 48 hours. Aggressive moisturizing during this window adds 2–3 days to the final wear.
Do
- Apply water-based lotion every morning and after every shower
- Drink plenty of water: hydrated skin holds color longer
- Apply SPF when outside: UV breaks down DHA

- Oil-based lotions, body butters, or coconut oil
- Chlorinated pools
- AHAs, BHAs, retinol, or any exfoliating skincare
Day 4–10
Maintain + extend
By day 4 you'll see the color start to mellow: that's normal. Keep moisturizing twice daily and you'll hold an even color through day 10. Patchiness this late is almost always dry skin in those spots.
Do
- Daily moisturizer: twice if your skin is naturally dry
- Lukewarm showers; pat dry, never rub
- Touch up dry spots (knees, elbows, ankles) extra

- Long hot baths or saunas
- Self-tanner top-ups without consulting your artist (overdosing DHA can leave green tones)
- Body scrubs: they accelerate fade
