Tap to Pay on iPhone
Your iPhone is the reader
Apple’s Tap to Pay turns your iPhone into a card reader. No dongle, no monthly fee, no separate hardware to remember on a house call. Goldenhour’s iOS app wires it up to Stripe Terminal so the money flows where the rest of your transactions do.
Eligibility
iPhone Xs or newer
Needs NFC. Pre-Xs models don’t have the right NFC chip.
iOS 16.4+
Most current phones already meet this. Older models may need an OS update.
US Stripe Connect
Goldenhour Stripe account onboarded to a US-based business. Tap to Pay isn’t available internationally yet.
The flow
Charge an appointment in 30 seconds
- 01Open the goldenhour iOS app to the just-completed appointment.
- 02Tap “Collect payment”. Confirm the amount (auto-filled from service + add-ons).
- 03Hand the phone (or hold it card-side-up) to the customer. They tap their card / Apple Pay / Apple Wallet pass to the top of the iPhone.
- 04Charge processes. Receipt fires by email + SMS per the customer’s preferences. Appointment auto-marked paid in goldenhour.
Compared to alternatives
Why this matters for mobile artists
| Option | Hardware | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Goldenhour Tap to Pay | Your iPhone | 2.7% + $0.05 |
| Square Reader (mobile) | $50-$100 dongle | 2.6% + $0.15 |
| Manual entry (any platform) | None | ~3.5% + $0.15 (key-in rate) |
| Customer Venmo/Cash app | None (their phone) | Free (consumer rails) |
Venmo / Cash App work for casual transactions but don’t feed into your goldenhour records or auto- generate receipts: making bookkeeping painful + chargeback defense impossible.
Operational
Three habits
- Keep the iPhone at >30% battery. Below 10% iOS refuses Tap to Pay. Carry a power bank for full days.
- Clean case or no case. Some thick cases interfere with NFC pickup at the tap zone. If a customer’s card doesn’t register on first tap, remove the case + retry.
- Have a fallback. For the rare customer with a chip-only card or a dead phone, keep a Stripe Payment Link bookmark on your home screen: sends them an SMS with a one- tap web checkout.
FAQ
- What is Tap to Pay on iPhone?
- Apple's feature that lets an iPhone act as an NFC card reader. The customer taps their physical card, Apple Pay, or Apple Wallet pass against your iPhone's NFC area to pay. Released in 2022 for the US, now widely available. Goldenhour's iOS app integrates Stripe Terminal to enable it.
- What do I need to use it?
- An iPhone Xs or newer (NFC-enabled), iOS 16.4 or later, a US-based goldenhour account with Stripe Connect onboarded, and the goldenhour iOS app installed. No external reader, no card terminal, no separate device. Free on every iPhone that qualifies.
- What does it cost?
- 2.7% + $0.05 per transaction. Same as Stripe's published in-person rate; goldenhour doesn't markup. This is cheaper than Square's in-person rate (2.6% + $0.15) on transactions over ~$10, and dramatically cheaper than what Vagaro / Booksy charge with their bundled processors.
- Can I take Apple Pay + contactless cards?
- Yes: Apple Pay, Google Pay, contactless credit cards (Visa / Mastercard / Amex / Discover), and Apple Wallet stored cards all work via NFC tap. Chip-card-only transactions need a separate reader; for solo mobile artists, the contactless coverage is usually enough.
